Why Kanye West Needs To Mind His Own Business!

Kanye-Beck

(PCM) Many people reading the title of this article may think that I am saying that I don’t like Kanye or that I don’t have any respect for his musical contributions as a whole, however that couldn’t be further from the truth.

I actually love Kanye. I love that he is not afraid to be experimental with his music, always creating something that is very different and unique. I love that he will defend his art to the bitter end and doesn’t feel the need to have to  justify it is anyone. He is one artist that you can never put into a box and he is single-handedly able to flip genre stereotypes right out the window.

However … he has absolutely no right to tell others what is and isn’t art. Yes, the man is certainly entitled to his opinion, but to go on national television and literally attempt to ruin someone’s glory is just plain wrong. Beck deserved that Grammy just as much as Beyonce if not more! To say that another artist’s hard work and dedication to their craft is not real music and that they should just hand over their award (and the prestige that goes along with it) is just insane.

I hate to break it to you Kanye, but you are not the be all end all of music appreciation. While I think Kanye is a phenomenal artist, I also happen to think that Beck is an equally phenomenal artist as well. Does that make me some kind of idiot? I don’t think so! Every genre of music has its’ fans and any good music critic is able to appreciate the differences between these genres and look at the ways in which these artists create music that makes us feel.

Did Beyonce release an amazing album?  Absolutely. However it is worth nothing that when you really break things down, how much of that album did Beyonce actually write? Did she produce it? Did she play all the instruments? To say that Beck does not respect true artistry is absolutely ludicrous. Beck not only wrote all of the songs on “Morning Phase”, but he also played all of the instruments and even produced the album himself. If that is not some type of true artistry than I just do not know!

When Kanye walked up on the stage as Beck was accepting his award for Album Of The Year from Prince, many people thought based upon Kanye’s sly smile that he was only mocking the past incident where he stormed the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards and interrupted Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech, again claiming Beyonce should have won. Beck handled the situation way better than I would have and even asked him if he wanted to stay.

It later turned out that Kanye was not joking at all when he made his diss about Beck not respecting true artistry and that he should hand over the award to Beyonce during an interview at a Grammy after party with Entertainment Tonight. Beck even handled the diss with humility saying “I was just so excited he was coming up. West deserves to be on stage just as much as anybody. How many great records has he put out in the last five years, right?”  He did not even take offence to Kanye’s comments saying “I thought she was going to win. Come on, she’s Beyonce! . . . You can’t please everybody, man. I still love [West] and think he’s genius. I aspire to do what he does.”

Has Kanye even listened to “Morning Phase”, I would be utterly shocked if the answer was yes. In the interview Kanye says that “We as musicians need to inspire people who go to work everyday and they listen to that Beyonce album and it takes them to another place”, however why could the same thing not be said about Beck? Maybe people are just as inspired by “Morning Phase”.

I certainly applaud Beck for taking the higher road, but there is still zero excuse for having they type of attitude Kanye does about another artists work, so I’ll stick with my initial reaction to the situation thinking ‘Seriously Kanye … mind your own business’!
