(PCM) We are incredibly shocked and deeply saddened to report that legendary artist David Bowie has passed away after an 18-month battle with cancer at the age of 69. Initially when early reports of his passing began to circulate online, they were deemed to be a hoax, however Bowie’s son Duncan Jones has confirmed his father’s passing via Twitter in a posting which reads “Very sorry and sad to say it’s true. I’ll be offline for a while. Love to all.”
At around 6:30am, statements were posted to Bowie’s official Facebook and Twitter accounts revealing that he had succumbed to his battle with cancer that read as follows: “David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”
Bowie had just released his new album “Blackstar” last Friday, January 8 which also happened to coincide with his 69th birthday. “Blackstar” was Bowie’s 28th album release and was met with strong critical praise. The album’s title track was recently chosen as the title theme for the crime drama “The Last Panthers” airing on Sky Atlantic. To us Bowie was the definition of a musical icon. He had the amazing ability to flawlessly blend such a wide array of music genres and yet always remain true to himself. We are hard pressed to find anyone who isn’t a fan. He wasn’t afraid of taking risks and the result gave us music that defined and spanned multiple generations. He brought down barriers and his music will forever live on in our hearts.
It is an eerie coincidence that the opening line to Bowie’s latest single “Lazarus” is “Look up here/I’m in heaven”…. it is almost as if he is making sure that his last message is received. We can’t even begin to imagine what he must have been going through knowing about his diagnosis for 18 months and still putting out this final brilliant piece of art.
There have been no additional details surrounding Bowie’s death that have been released at this time. Our sincere condolences go out to Bowie’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.
